Vintage Inspiration

I've been really feeling a major vintage vibe lately. I mean, real vintage. Not like, 90's vintage - I'm talking about Belle Epoque, the Gilded Age, Kennedy-era, all that. The Good Times. I read a fantastic book called The Power of Style, which dedicates a chapter each to some of history's most fashionable, influential women. Some I had never heard of - Daisy Fellowes, Rita Lydig, Elsie DeWolfe, Millicent Rogers- others I know of well -C.Z Guest, Jacqueline Kennedy, Coco Chanel, and a Guinness or two. It was just so amazing to read about the lost art of simply being chic.

Here are some of my fave vintage photos that have been lurking on my computer. Perfect for enjoying while waiting for snow on the East Coast.

Fresh from my weekend in NYC visiting my best friend Lexi. The entire weekend was simply perfection! From messing with makeup at the MAC counter at Bloomies to dinner at Alta, drinks at the Knickerbocker, and manis at Bliss, I could not have asked for a more perfect little escape. Sometime what I love most about New York is being able to come and go as I please. And having a BFF with a sick apt in the West Village doesn't hurt either.

Lexi treated me to a manicure at Bliss Spa in Soho - Love this color: Glamour Purse by Essie

Lexi's new signature look: Ring finger painted a similar but different color.

At Alta, best restaurant in NYC and one of the best restaurants in the world, without a doubt. Definitely make it a point to go next time you're in the West Village, but just make sure you make reservations and bring cash.

At the Knickerbocker - one of the best, low-key spots in NYC, and great ice cream sundaes.

Holiday Magic

A really great holiday, or any celebration for that matter, is made up of no less than three parts:

1.) The Dinner:

The Italian tradition is to eat 7 fish on Christmas Eve. We also had handmade artichoke ravioli, a French Bouche de Noel (made by moi!), and an English classic -Figgy Pudding! (Sorry for the blurry picture! Someone hit the Limoncello too hard)

Holiday Shimmer

A couple weeks ago, I got the perfect invite - A make-up sesh with Chase Astyn, the brains behind 15 years worth of The Body Shop's make-up collections, on a Friday, after work but before my plans to shop and have drinks with a friend. What could be more perfectly timed??

I really loved this super-sheer lipstick (Colourglide Lipstick in Soft Peony) Chase used on my lips. It's the lightest, sweetest shade of lilac, and just politely hints at color - it's basically the creaminess of a lipstick but the sheerness of a tinted balm - but a lot less messy to use.

As a bonafide girly-girl, I. Died when I saw a little bottle of pale pink shimmering powder that gets spritzed in a graceful princess-worthy puff. It works on face and hair, and just gives a subtle shine -- nothing the Jersey Shore girls would be interested in, but just fine for me!

Another favorite product was the Extra Virgin Mineral Cream foundation, which was literally (and I know the term is over-used but you gotta believe me!) weightless. He finished off my lips with a hit of Hi-Shine Lip Treatment in pink, and BAM. Ready for a night out.

I know everyone out there has at least one product from the Body Shop. I have pretty much the entire collection, from head to toe. I love everything - the packaging, the sweet scents, the simplicity - it's all so unfussy and easy to use, affordable but not cheap, natural, plus, and most importantly, The Body Shop gives back! They never test on animals, and they donate to several really important causes, like women's rights. What, pray tell, is not to love?

Now get out there and get yourself a Holiday gift. A girls gotta shimmer every now and then, oui?

Lace and Pumpkin

I paired this body-conscious, but super comfortable stretch cotton Ann Taylor dress with pumpkin-colored accessories - a vintage belt, my beloved whiskey-flask-case-cum-purse, and opaque tights. I love the front zipper feature on the dress, and the all-over lace print. Definitely a winter staple.

And on a gossip note: I heard that the president of Ann Taylor was really unhappy with the choice to cast Demi Moore in the ad campaign. They have a new designer (hence the line's new, fresher, and may I say more blogger-friendly look) who hand selected her and was adamant about using her. I have to say, Mr. President - I absolutely love her in the ads, even though I'm not a personal fan (consider me neutral on Demi Moore - gorgeous, I respect her, but that's about my level of commitment) and I really only started taking note of the brand after seeing her ads in magazines.

On another note, they've got some major, awesome sales going on right now online and in stores. Check it.

Thankful For: Bright Colors.

Bright colors, among other things, of course!

Every Thanksgiving, my family and I go watch a (strictly symbolic) fox hunt (no animals hurt!) in the country side. Its a very British tradition, reinterpreted and brought back to life on America's East Coast. Its basically a high-brow tailgating event, and I look forward to it every year. I never thought I'd say this, but I think its so incredible to get out of the city every now and then and enjoy crisp, cool air, clear skies, beautiful horses and their riders (in covetable red coat-tails), champagne and great food. Plus there is always some pretty entertaining fashion, from the ladies in full fur coats, men in Barbour, and many an interesting hat.

The Body Shop is my go-to for everything beauty-related. From feet to body to make-up, my routine is pretty much dominated by The Body Shop. I tend to find their products just so easy, non-fussy, great smelling, cutely packaged, and affordable but not cheap or tacky. They support amazing causes like women's rights and animal rights (kind of funny that those two categories - women and animals - are in the same sentence...hmm, but that's for another post).

The new Holiday 2011 make-up collection was just released this week, and I got a chance to have Chase Aston, the man behind 15 years worth of Body Shop make-up and some seriously beautiful red-carpet looks (inside dish - Cameron Diaz is a favorite client of his!) walk me through the products and do my make-up. And, he got me to appreciate silver eye shadow - As a dark-haired, Mediterranean-blooded gal, I thought I couldn't wear cool colors and I always stuck to golds and browns, but Chase got me to branch out, and the 4 Step Smokey Eye Palette is the way to start. It's even got a step-by-step, illustrated instructional on the back. Perfect!!

My favorite is The Sparkler, a light-weight, subtle, grown-up shimmer powder for face and hair that you mist on with a vintage-inspired poof. (There's got to be a technical word for it...but check out the above photo, in the top left corner. See what I mean?)

Fashionable First Friday

Friday night, us girls at Emily Muller opened our studio/showroom to the public for the first time! It was a truly perfect evening - our new studio has a fresh coat of paint, and the clothing looked amazing - we had our new collections out along with some pieces from the archives. Plus, a ton of Boston's glitterati turned up to try on clothing, check out "Escape", the new SS2012 collection, and enjoy some libations. The air was crackling with good will, and every time I looked around the room everyone was smiling, laughing, and having a good time. Enemies became friends, friends became Best Friends -- a good time was had by all. And I could have sworn I saw a unicorn gallop past the open door and wink at us.

God (Fashion God, of course - non-denominational, although has a soft-spot for YSL) knows I love a big, dramatic collar, so I literally snatched this Emily Muller vest so quickly that there was a smoke imprint where it used to be. Snakeskin blouse from Kenneth Cole.

for this Vivienne Westwood coat - nay, cloak of the Gods? I found this at Riccardi on Newbury Street here in Boston, when instead of eating on my lunch break I decided to hunt for the perfect non-blah coat. And find it, I did. Feast your eyes, my crumpets -

Betsey Johnson - Boston or Bust

If you have talked to me at all in the past few days, you know that I saw - nay, lived - Betsey Johnson this past weekend. She was in Boston for a huge (and may I add successful!) fundraiser for the non-profit that her brother, Bob Johnson, chairs - the South End Community Health Center, which raises money for people in need who have cancer - a cause very close to her heart, no pun intended.

Saturday, which the Mayor of Boston declared Betsey Johnson Day, started off with a conference at the MFA.

Naturally, Ms. Johnson made an entrance - she snuck onto the stage 30 minutes late, wearing a beanie, socks with pink heels, and dragging two Betseyville suitcases full of 5 decades worth of stand-outs from her past collections, which she unpacked over the course of an hour or so and laid out on the stage as she answered audience questions.

She spoke a lot about how she went from a small town Connecticut girl - a ballerina who wore pearls and crewneck sweaters, if you'll believe that! - to living and loving the 60's, Studio 54, her 1990's lingerie-inspired pieces (one of which I was wearing!), licensing, and everything in between!

Another gratuitous picture - I literally knocked people out of the way like it was 6am at Target on Black Friday.

I'll take this opportunity now to say that Betsey Johnson looked up into the audience, saw me wearing one of her dresses, and said, to me, "I remember that dress!!".

I. Died.

Then, I went home to rest - I literally needed to take a nap and reflect on my proximity to my fashion idol - before rezhuzhing my make-up for evening and adding a necklace to head to the fashion show!

And....of course, my camera's battery died, but I did manage to snap some shots with my cell phone (what I'm getting at here is - Pardon the poor quality of the photos!) I will say, not having a camera and not trying to take the "perfect" shot was so relaxing and enlightening. I got to sit back and enjoy the show. Which I certainly did. This was easily the best fashion show I have ever seen - the models were having a blast walking the cat walk, dancing, striking goofy poses, the clothing was in-your-face fun, the music was a feminist mix of everything from Nikki Minaj to Peaches to M.I.A., and it was all wrapped up in a pretty little bow when Betsey did one of her trademark cartwheels down the runway.

This pink Fiat is the horse she rode in on, and is being raffled online - you can purchase a raffle ticket here.

Betsey with her lovely assistant, Petra wearing an awesome burnout tunic, which Betsey admitted doesn't represent the things she likes to design, but which sold like hotcakes. Hey, I'd wear it!

Before runway, models stood on cubes in the lounge areas. Each cube was marked with one of the 5 decades Betsey has been wowing Barbies everywhere -- I think this one was 60's?

My First Jumpsuit Experience - Emily Muller SS2012

Here are a couple of very quick photos of the outfit I wore literally ALL weekend. I absolutely love the buttery silk, the huge harem leg that literally dances like a rolling river when I walk (yes, I feel that strongly about it) and the Obi belt, that I should probably try as a headband one of these days.

Here I am trying it on for the very first time in Emily's studio in South Boston. Look at my huge grin!! And note, this was preceded with "I don't know if I'm a jumpsuit person...." Busted.

I'm wearing literally the jumpsuit from the runway, and I'm not a size 2 model. I think it's great to find a piece of clothing so versatile and universally flattering (well, that's assuming that you readers agree that it looks good on me...but I felt great in it, so that counts for something, oui?) It's like Sisterhood of the Travelling Onesie!

Styles for a Dapper Gent, Woman-Approved.

I was recently inspired by seeing designer Christian Cota at Saks Fifth Avenue during FNO. I just loved his dapper, old-world elegance, dapper style. His style reminded me of a Cuban gentleman who opens the door for his lady friend before getting into the drivers seat of his 1959. In suit with borrowing from the boys, (no pun intended!) I love the gent in the photo's stilo. In particular, I love the velvet slipper shoes. For those of you that follow me on facebook, you'll know that in my Hurricane Irene Online Shopathon, I stalked several styles, and have pretty much decided that someone is going to buy me a pair of custom embroidered slipper shoes from Del Toro for my birthday (October 27th, Scorpio Power!!)

Emerson brings Boston to NYFW

I know, I know -- BFW is still going on, so I should be writing about that, right? But I'm still not caught up on NYFW, and since Emerson, and designer Jackie Fraser-Swan, are from Boston, let's call it even.

Emerson Collection, named after Fraser-Swan's distant relative, the great thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson, was founded in 2009 and hit New York runways earlier this month for the first time, to great reviews and a promising future:

Fraser-Swan didn't leave her classic Boston sensibilities behind - the show was the epitome of Minimalist - the collection was toned-down, anything but showy or ostentatious, and was presented in a way that viewers could immediately imagine incorporating the pieces into her own wardrobe. After all, Kelly Cutrone and the rest of the scowling geniuses at People's Republic had a strong hand in putting the show together. Gratuitous, shocking-for-the-sake-of-shocking displays are just not their style, oui?

Lines, geometrics, subtle color blocking, boxy silhouettes, and random intervals of bold, fuzzy purple, gave the most subtle nod to the more classic side of the 1980's, but it was done in such an innovative way that it didn't seem done-to-death like so many other 80's inspired lines. I think we can attribute that to Fraser-Swans classic Boston sensibilities - she definitely veers more towards wearable and subtle rather than flashy or ostentatious.

Oh, and the best part? I got past Cutrone's eagle eyes and sat front row! (Get ready for shameless self-smugness and a tasteless photo-shopped arrow: )

I do think some of the earlier looks could have been either left out or styled differently - so many of the pieces were truly remarkable - digitally printed futuristic dresses, intricate, loose lace details, pops of color - but right around the middle, the show slowed down with a few basics - monotone, muted cotton jersey that didn't do Emerson's talent and vision justice, in my eyes. Better a shorter show with only WOW factor pieces that a longer show filled out with basics, methinks.

Thess are looks that I didn't think really fit the whole fresh, adventurous, innovative feel of the show.

So if your in town, pop in to the boutique on Newbury Street to get out of the rain and into Emerson's beautiful Spring/Summer collection, and if you're not in town, you should be, if not for Boston's history or baked beans, then definitely for the fashion!

Back Stage at Emily Muller

Last night was the culmination of three really intense weeks in my new post at Emily Muller. This might be the understatement of the century, but....SO much work, blood, sweat, and tears (literally...all three of the latter were shed!) goes into putting on a runway show!!!!

More on the show later, but here are some photos I managed to take between craziness backstage.

Backstage is by far the best place to be during a fashion show. I've sat front row at NYFW, I've stood in the back (also at NYFW), but being backstage at the reincarnation of Boston Fashion Week was so amazing and such a rush! It really is the nucleus of the entire show, and the energy, ambition, and chaos are palpable. I can safely say I'm addicted now.

In Which Tilda Swinton Winks at Me, and Other NYC Adventures

Better late than never, oui? Here are my best shots from FNO, now 12 days ago, which will go down in my own personal history as one of the best nights ever! I saw Tilda Swinton (and, as promised in the above title of this post, she winked at me, which I happened to catch on film), saw Kris Humphries, who is much better looking in person than he ever was on any E! reality show, talked to a woman who was allegedly Lamar Odom's mom (noticing a trend here?), got my photo taken with Doutzen Kroes and Elettra Rosselini Weidemann, saw Valentino on Madison Avenue, and finished the night at Missoni, where I spoke to three generations of fabulous Missoni's in Italian! Was it all a dream? These photos are the only evidence I have that it was not a fashion fantasy:

Tilda Swinton was at Saks repping for Pringle of Scotland - How genius is the raccoon sweater? Also pictured: a mini retrospective and an exhibit of classic Pringle of Scotland argyle sweaters.

Loved this fur vest from Saks -- it reminded me of my dog Portia!

Saks also had a little pick-up basketball game going on the Men's floor. Kris Humphries looks good in person, oui?

Downstairs at Saks, Hillary Rhodes, the face of Estee Lauder, greeted customers and fans. Liu Wen was also there.

Then, I got a photograph with Elettra Rossellini Weidemann, in Zara. She complimented my make-up! My lipstick matched her dress. We're best friends now.

Life is Too Short to Blend In: Falguni and Shane Peacock

This was a truly amazing show!!!! And of course, it was my last show on Friday night so my poor trusty (hereby to be referred to as un-trusty) camera had a dead battery! At a show attended by Joan Rivers! The horror!! Oh, and someone named Porcelain Black -- more on her later.

Back to the show - Think Indian Versace meets Civil War soldier meets Space Age. Exactly what Cleopatra would have worn if she were alive in 3000AD.

I cannot applaud Falguni and Shane enough -- there were so many familiar, done-to-death elements - in theory - that the designers put such a fresh spin on that it totally breathed new life into already (overly) familiar trends, like the body harness, which they designed, styled and presented in a way that was more Mehendi than S&M, and of course, a blogger trademark, the diaphanous maxi skirt, that on their runway went from tired and overplayed to an exotic, Arabian Nights staple:

The Maxi Skirt in a new light - this displays a more Seize-the-World attitude than a Oh-Who-Me? I-Just-Threw-This-On.

The Harnesses ranged from full body to assymetric to corset-like, but in a whole spectrum of colors and they were each styled to specifically compliment the dress rather than be the only focal point.

Everything was complimented with geometric shapes that somehow seemed at once angular and rounded, strong shoulders that were still delicate, sequins that were demure. And, in keeping with their name - Peacock - The use of feathers was an obvious touch. And, God knows I love a good turban.

The only thing I didn't really like porcelain black closing the show - the other looks and models were stately and exotic and otherworldy, alien-like, and Porcelain Black, with her black and white frizzy hair and tattoos and too-bold makeup seemed like it was more for shock value than cohesion. It seemed like the two designers couldn't decide on a theme for the show, and one of the won, and as a concession allowed the other to add one element of their own. Know what I mean?

Great show -- and a show is just what it was - it was at once entertaining and inspiring. It wasn't one of those shows that you can attend and emulate the next day, but it certainly made me want to embrace my inner goddess!

More NYFW Frenzied Amazingness

A Maybelline billboard near Times Square. Call me crazy, but...I've never seen Maybelline makeup like that at CVS.

Here are some photos of my first day at NYFW, from checking in to the Hudson Hotel, a convenient 3 blocks away from the Lincoln Center, but an inconvenient trillion blocks from Milk Studios. But still, the perfect NYC hotel.

I loved the Malin and Goetz products the Hudson provided. After shampooing with peppermint, conditioning with cilantro, and using rum body wash, I felt like a human hot-pot buffet! However, to clarify - My first words coming out of the shower to my mom were "Mom, my hair feels like rich person hair!"

I definitely recommend trying the shampoo and conditioner - Malin and Goetz has an outpost in NYC, I can see myself walking in there innocently enough and getting sucked into a vortex of amazing luxury grooming products.

I'd also like to note that the hotel had a vending machine by the elevators that sold fur coats, jewelry, purses, and other necessities.

Next, I got changed and did hair and make-up in about 8 minutes and we ran, not walked, to the Lincoln Center for Tadashi. And, of course, the show started late..! In our downtime we read the Daily Mag and stopped by the Rowenta photobooth for pictures.

These "Crack Pies" were one of the snacks for sale at the Lincoln Center cafe.

After Tadashi Shoji's runway, we stayed in-theme and went for sushi at Sushi Go-Go, across from the Lincoln Center.

Where's Waldo NYFW Edition

A look from the Costello Tagliapietra runway, which featured digitally printed, super-drapey dresses and clashing-matching tops and leggings.

- Can you spy who is behind Simon Doonan and Miss Jay Alexander at Costello Tagliapietra? I am! And, Corinne Bailey Rae was sitting next to Simon, but kept getting whisked away for photos and interviews. Great show, and great front row! I was so close I could hear Miss Jay exclaim "That girl is hungry" after one particularly emaciated model dragged herself past on the runway.

This was probably one of the best shows I've been to - the clothing was fantastic plus the audience was so well-curated and everyone had a great, positive energy and seemed to genuinely support the design duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra. Already looking forward to next season's show!

NYFW Updates

I've added a lot of really exciting shows and events to my NYFW lineup since we last spoke. I left Boston this morning, before the sun rose, to head to NYC and catch the Tadashi Shoji show. Only for fashion's sake would I wake up that early...!

After that, I'll head back to the Hudson Hotel

I'm most looking forward to seeing Tilda Swinton, one of my favorites, and in my opinion, one of the most fascinating people like, ever. (If you don't already know where she will be, I won't disclose here, because I don't want to risk there being too many people there and me not seeing her! In case you didn't know, I'm obsessed with her, and also greedy and selfish so there!)

Then, as I mentioned, I'll be praying for another Karl Lagerfeld sighting, preferably with his boytoy/muse Giacobbini.

Details: Asos Preview

As I posted a few days ago, a group of Boston bloggers and I were invited to preview some pieces from the upcoming FW2011 collection from asos.com. It was kind of torturous because I wanted to buy everything, especially these red "Ashford" boots. (Sidenote: almost all of my shoes are black. Boring! I need these!)

I was also equally obsessed with this lucite, day-glo necklace. Genius!!

I loved the English Tea Time snacks they provided, although I was too busy devouring clothes, and then later regretted not eating some of the pastries.

Wedding Details

I went to my friend Nicole's wedding last weekend, which is why I couldn't go to Kim Kardashian's nuptuals. Whatevsies, I didn't want to go to her party anyway!

We had such a great time eating a combo of Brazilian and American foods (rice and beans, Brazilian BBQ, sliders and french fries, and amazing tres leche cupcakes for dessert!), dancing to her brother's band, and soaking in the chicness provided by all of Nicole's friends, many of whom are designers, artists, and musicians, or otherwise just Brazilian and therefore awesome.

Barbie Dream Suite

Can you imagine a better email correspondence than the one that follows:

Starworks PR - Hey Renata, we're inviting you to preview choice pieces from the asos F/W2011 collection in a suite at the Ames Hotel in Boston. Lots of Boston Bloggers and press are invited. There will be sticky buns and fresh squeezed juices, and killer views, post-earthquake.
Me - Um, Yeah!! I'll be there.

So needless to say, I was there and it was fabulous! My first impression, just from walking in the door, was 1950s, in every sense. Yeah, there were the obligatory Mad Men-inspired numbers: Feminine sweaters in candy shades, an ultra-ladylike tweed dress, but there was the other face of the 1950's - a leather biker jacket with leopard print panels in the front that would surely get an approving nod from Fonzi, and metallic, high waisted leopard print pants that the post-makeover Sandra D. would don to win over Danny Zuko in Grease.

I "styled" this outfit - I like the way the mustard plays off of the gold, and the patterns seem to playfully mimic each other. I'd wear it. Would you?

Despite my No-Leather policy....I kinda really love this jacket. As evident by that huge smile on my face!

The world as I imagine it - a place where leather, tweed, and leopard can all live in harmony.

As I made my way through the rest of the collection, there was literally (and this is what I love about asos) something for everyone, of every taste. Futuristic plastic necklaces mingled with 70's tasseled loafers on the mantle, floppy Brigitte Bardot hats shared space with a pair of creepers (my readers may know that is my least favorite trend, ever, but for the sake of having something for everyone, I approve).

I was smitten by this satiny black bustier dress, complete with mesh side panels. Wowza. I can see Madonna wearing this to her kids PTA meeting.

Mark my words, those red heels (they are called "Arsenic", and they'll be out next month!) will be mine!!

This shirt pretty much sums up the collection - 70's by way of 40's, tuxedo meets weekend-wear, with a pussy-bow.

And the coats! I tried on an impossibly cozy suede poncho that was like getting a hug from a polar bear. It was so thick that I couldn't hear the conversation around me when I had the hood up! Perfect for a Boston winter, I reckon.

I'll share some more little details with you in the next post. In the meantime, I'm going to sit in a chair and wait patiently for my order from asos.com to arrive - I ordered some accessories for NYFW: A harness and a floppy hat, to name a few.

NYFW Here I Come, Again!

I'm starting to get really, really excited for Mercedes Benz Fashion week coming up in September! I can't wait for Fashion's Night Out, the amazing shows, and the great street style! I am definitely looking forward to the Tadashi Shoji show on the 8th -- he's one of my favorite designers, and he designed the dress I wore to two of my three weddings (all to the same lovely man, at various international destinations).

This is my beautiful Tadashi Shoji bandage dress that I wore at my Turkish wedding. Here I am with a bellydancer on the yacht ride up the Bosphorus. She gave me a run for my money!

Aside from that, I'll be stopping by Saks 5th Avenue for FNO - there will be some great events and designer sightings, and I'll also do all that's in my power to make another Lagerfeld sighting happen, like last year! I also played Bingo with Chrisopher Benz, Karolina Kurkova (who kept rooting for me to win, by the way. No big deal.) and Jessica Szohr, who is 1000 times more beautiful in person than she is on Gossip Girl. I spotted Dakota Fanning at Gucci later in the evening.

Yes, I was thisclose to Unkle Karl!!

I will also stop by the Amare Sinh showroom to check out some of his latest pieces. Designer Huy, his sister Huyen, and their youngest sister Sandy founded the company in my native Philadelphia, with an outpost in NYC and Shanghai. When I first saw one of Huy's pieces in a magazine, I was floored and immediately contacted him. I've been in touch with his PR group for a while now, and I'm happy to finally be able to see his collection en vive!

Then maybe a cooling-off period in the Hamptons? I would love to get some more ocean-side time in before the harsh winter sets in in Boston and I forget what the warmth of the sun and the enticing sting of salty air is like!

Urban Nomads

My bestie Kaj is in town this week, and since I still don't have a job (help me, Fashion Gods!), I had plenty of time to walk around town with her, take in the sights, pursue the most idle of follies, and eat to our hearts delight.

Our first stop was the waterfront, where we laughed at children playing in fountains, while wishfully musing that if we hadn't just straightened our hair we would follow suit.

Concrete Jungle

Living on the waterfront is one of the most beautiful and luxurious opportunities ever! This is the view from my house. Unreal!! And since I live in a mostly residential area, its pretty much deserted during the day. I get this all to myself!

I threw on a Maj tank top (its the softest, stretchiest, and one of the randomly sexiest items I have) and my mom's Michael Kors silk pants that she gave me after never wearing them, and headed out to take some photos and enjoy the breeze and the quiet.

I hardly ever wear pants unless they are leopard print or remarkable in some way. I have to say, I think there's nothing more pathetic than wearing something plain and ordinary. If you walk out the door to a public area and look at the people around you, I gaurantee over half of them are wearing jeans. And what is worse, in my opinion, is that some demin companies have the chutzpah to charge $200 or more for a clothing item that isn't visibly different from the mass-produced discount brands. I may not have the biggest clothing budget, but I do try to veer away from the Uniform and be individual and expressive! It helps when my mom compulsively buys something and then gives it to me a few weeks later. Phew, its feels good to get that little rant off my chest. Sorry to my readers and friends who wear jeans on the regular. I get it. But try wearing something more expressive, more exciting, and more you!

Fact: Sometimes, fashion is portrayed in a photograph that doesn't even feature any clothing.

Fashion is often about attitude, inner beauty, and marketing. Shy-but-determined, Alone-but-strong, In love, Coy, Brazen, Dripping with Sex (hint: Elizabeth Taylor): These are all emotions that the photographer and the model make us feel, emotions that sell a certain lifestyle or represent a certain brand, emotions that simply make us need something, at any cost, even if we don't exactly know what it is.

Night at the Museum

Last Thursday my honey and I went to the ICA, which is conveniently located on Boston's Harbor, to take in the live music and beautiful scenery. I always feel so lucky and luxurious to be sitting on the water, watching sail boats and little dinner cruise boats drift by, listen to live music, and be surrounded by so many happy people! It also helped that I was toting a sport bottle full of white wine.

Whiskey Sour and Nomaddicts

This little nugget is the newest (and oldest) addition to my small but stead purse collection. My dad is probably rolling in his khaki's right now, because he gave me specific instructions not to use his grandfather's flask carrier as a purse, but I think it works better as a purse than Media-Unit-Shelf decoration! (When I rescued this baby, it had been on top of the wardrobe that houses our TV and various electronics in the family living room for over 10 years, I would speculate). The handle was completely disintegrating, and the threading was coming lose, but it was still in tact and even still contained the glass and silver flasks marked "scotch" and "whiskey", plus a little silver shot glass! I especially love the little gold initials J.K. on the front. It's a living piece of history! I imagine my great grandfather taking this on long trips by train across barren landscapes...ok I'm drifting into Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman territory now.

I had a friend, Victoria Chan of Nomaddicts, give it a little TLC. She lovingly restored the handle, and while the bag itself is a little haggard looking, I think that gives it character, oui?

Stella McCartney Cake by Apollina

Apollina, of the www.apollinas.com fame, is a genius. Her blog is amazing, she has great taste, even her name is super cute. She created and baked this stunning homage to Stella McCartney, and I, along with the rest of the blogosphere, am beyond impressed. She shared her inspiration board, photos, and the recipe with the world, so I'll do my part to make sure the word keeps getting out. Check out the gorgeous creation, and try your hand at it, if you dare!

Here is Apollina's recipe - I do recommend reading her comments first, because she gives some additional tips and pointers, plus how she came up with the recipe.

Citrus Cake with Lemon Curd Filling and Lemon & Orange Icing

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus more for the pans
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for the pans
grated zest of 2 oranges
grated zest of two lemons
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup whole milk
Blood oranges*, regular oranges, lemons, limes sliced to arrange on top of the cake
fresh mint, also to arrange on top of the cake

Directions

Heat oven to 350°F. Butter two 8″, 9″ or 10″ round cake pans, line the bottoms with parchment, butter again, and dust with flour, tapping out the excess. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
Using an electric (or hand mixer -that’s all I have at the moment!), beat the butter and sugar on medium-high until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Mix in the grated zest of the oranges and lemons. Beat in the vanilla, then the eggs one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary.
Reduce mixer speed to low. Add the flour mixture in 3 additions and the milk in 2 additions, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix just until combined (don’t over mix).
Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans, leveling the top of each with a large spoon or rubber spatula. Bake until a toothpick from the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes for 8-inch pans, 22 to 25 minutes for 9-inch pans and 20 to 22 minutes for a 10 inch pan. Cool the cakes in the pans for 15 minutes, then turn out onto racks to cool completely. (After they cooled, I wrapped and froze my cakes until the next day).

Transfer one of the cooled cakes to a plate and spread with the lemon curd. Top with the remaining cake and refrigerate to set, 30 minutes. Then frost the rest of the cake!

Lemon Curd Filling (adapted from RealSimple)

Ingredients

4 large eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
pinch salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces

Directions

In a heatproof bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, lemon zest and juice, and salt. Add the butter. Set the bowl over (not in) a saucepan of simmering water and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture has thickened (like the consistency of mayonnaise), 12 to 15 minutes. UPDATE: the lemon curd could take longer than 15 minutes to thicken up, just keep on whisking, I promise, it will happen.
Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl. Place a piece of parchment or wax paper directly on the surface of the lemon curd and refrigerate until completely cool, at least 2 hours and up to 2 days.

Fresh Orange Lemon Frosting

Ingredients

2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1 pound confectioners’ sugar (about 3 3/4 cups), sifted
pinch salt

Directions

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and lemon zest on high until light and fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the orange juice. Reduce mixer speed to low. Gradually add the sugar, then the salt, and beat until smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary. Ice the cake! UPDATE: I covered and refrigerated the icing overnight and then frosted the cake the next day after it thawed on the counter.

Last night was the Boston Blogger mixer at 28 Degrees, in Boston's South End. What fun!! I've got to admit - since I moved back here a few weeks ago, I know, like, 5 people, 4 of whom I am either married to or live with, so being out, in public, among some of Boston's finest and most fashionable was a great night indeed! I didn't get to speak with everyone, which I regret deeply because there were so many interesting people (pure speculation, judging by their covers) but I did get to talk to:

-The impossibly tall and gorgeous Noelani of Mon Petit Chou Chou
-Blonde-and-Texan Michele Moore
-Stylish Amy Allen of the Stylish Year blog and Loft (yeah, that Loft - jealous!)
-I finally met Kristin, who I can always count on for a.) beautiful posts on her blog The Boston Fashionista, and b.) sweet comments on my own posts. An Oklahoma girl with so much great energy!
-The affable girls who created the soon-to-launch, highly anticipated Directory B
-Covetous Creature Holly, who was wearing an amazing spiked shoe-harness as a belt and who's white hair matched her cream-colored, pleated dress
-Najeema, single and a great photographer, as documented by her blog A Stylized Hysteria
-The adorable, and not-foreign-despite-her-accent-which-sounded-foreign Shanna of Shannaseyeview
-RAW, the creator of Blog Sales United, who walked me all the way to the Arlington T stop

-And of course, the woman behind the planning, orchestrating, and throwing of the mixer and who, according to rumor, is leaving Boston soon, the Sassy and Just a Little Bit Outrageous Kinsey Micheals.

I took a total of about 3 photos at the mixer, because I was having so much fun chatting, so sorry for lack of evidence. However, I couldn't not take a picture of Holly's spiked belt. Too cool!

Now for my outfit - I wore basically head-to-toe vintage, and all of it either belonged to my grandmother or my great-grandfather. I hardly ever even wear vintage, let alone an entire outfit, but I think because I knew I was going to be in a room full of bloggers, I got overly excited and a little nervous (as SumoSkinny and I discussed, girls dress mostly for other girls, because guys don't notice all the details and hard work that goes into looking shmawesome!) so I wanted to wear my most cherished pieces, all at once!

I wore the silk flowered dress that my grandmother bought for my uncle's wedding 30 years ago, a leather whiskey flask carrier that I use as a purse (sorry dad!) that belonged to my great grandfather, "J.K.", and armloads of bangles. I used the sash from the dress as a headband/hair wrap, and Nine West flats, which aren't exactly vintage but they are from last year.

More on the bag in the next post - I'll also share with you the lovely lady who lovingly restored the bag's handle.

In Which I Get What I Want

I finally got my mitts on the Palm Skirt from All Saints. (Remember this post?) I've experienced this before - I try something on in a store, I love it, I need it, it will make my wardrobe, but for whatever reason (usually money, or the fear that it may not be wearable), I don't buy it right away. I go home, mull it over, and usually forget about it. But this skirt (much like the Umit Unal wool coat I bought a couple years ago) haunted my dreams and my waking moments. I checked online several times a day to make sure it was still in stock, in my size, and just to admire it. I asked second, third, fourth opinions. I asked my roommate's Turkish uncle. He liked it. I sent photos to my dad in Mexico. He liked it. Internationally, it was well received. But for some reason, I just knew it wasn't in my budget, and I couldn't get it. Then, last Friday, my darling Auntie sent me a check, and I ran to the ATM, cashed it, and ran home to buy the skirt. It's mine! And here's how I wore it for the very first time.

All Saints

Ok friends....I know its wayyyy past due, but Tuesday was my first time going into All Saints. Well, that's a lie. My second time, but the first time, I was intimidated and overwhelmed. This time I dove right in, trying on an armful of silk, ruffles, and parachute fabric, and I was in love.

I tried on a few pieces, and I really fell in love with these two:

All Saints Palm Skirt - $199, marked down to $79.

I'm not sure though, I'd love to hear your opinions, especially the skirt, which I have been dreaming about at night. What do you guys think?? Last time I asked your opinions, it was about these neon blue Senso shoes, which I ended up getting, against most of your advice, and then returning. I trust you guys!!

There was a day last week, where there was a warm mugginess and stillness in the air, and a certain je ne sais quoi in the natural light that made everything seem of another time. My outfit also ended up being very Otherworldly as well, and in keeping with the whole feel, I spent the afternoon in the Boston Public Library, which is absolutely stunning!

A sweeping marble staircase flanked by giant stone lions, mahogany shelves and fixtures, oil paintings, and high scaffolded ceilings. Not to mention the courtyard in the center, with cafe tables around the perimeter and a lovely reflecting pool in the middle of the manicured grass. Confession - Before hitting the books (er, laptop) I like to make a quick visit to the garden and imagine I'm part of the royal court, somewhere, in the 1800's, restless pacing in the courtyard while I scheme up some elaborate plot to bear and heir or poison a lover. That may or may not be patchwork from The Other Boleyn Girl and every episode of The Tudors I've ever seen on a trans-Atlantic flight...

Weekend at the Cape

I finally got to see Cape Cod this weekend -- Sandwich, MA to be exact. If you haven't been to Sandwich, you Simply Must. Its the perfect sleepy little town, with perfectly manicured lawns, adorable dollhouse homes, antiques, and little epicurean shops where you can find anything from locally made honey to African Argan oil for cooking.

The bag was handmade for me by my dads friend Louise, who lives in Mexico and founded a company there that employs and empowers local female artisans. I love knowing where my earthly possessions are from, who made them, and why. That's what a luxury bag is.

Dress, Armani Exchange. Flip-flop, Havaianas.

Locally caught fish and locally fried fries at the Belfry Bistro in Sandwich, and the place mat, which provided my inspiration for the day.

Then, we headed back to Boston to celebrate the 4th of July with an estimated 1 million of the most patriotic drunks on the East Coast.

Skirt and bag, vintage from my grandmother. Top, random. Shoes, Havaianas. Water bottle, Fiji.

And the best part of the weekend (besides spending quality time with family, seeing the ocean, Sandwich, eating great food, yadda yadda) was that I wore flip-flops all weekend. That's independence!

Renata Certo-Ware, the mastermind behind the Philly-based style and fashion blog, Scorpion Disco, is a self-proclaimed "fashion junkie," but she won't be caught dead dressing her beloved cockapoo, Portia, in silly outfits (although the blogger reluctantly admits to the purchase of a pint-sized raincoat for the pup). Here, the 25-year-old newlywed tells us how her blog came to be, and gives us insight into Philly's best spots for shopping and people-watching.

What prompted you to start Scorpion Disco?
Well, honestly, I was living in Istanbul with my boyfriend (now my husband) and I was bored! I spent a lot of time online, and I always gravitated towards the fashion blogs. I figured that I have a strong sense of style (at least, my mom thinks so!) and I wanted to join in the "conversation" that other people were having through their blog posts. The more people there are out there offering their opinions on fashion and their new finds, the more we all can learn from each other and form a community, so I figured, I'll jump right in!

How is your blog different from other fashion/style sites?
I include my own personal style, but I don't think I'm the authority on what to wear, nor do I have the resources to be, so I mix in a lot of photos of fashion shows and events I attend, things I buy or want to buy or want to eat, my favorite models, and new designers I "discover" on my internet browsing adventures.

How do you define your personal style?
Subject to mood and availability, first and foremost. But my general guidelines are bright colors, never neutral, never ordinary, never blend in! Basically, I'm not afraid of taking risks with an unexpected burst of color or mixing a vertically striped top with a horizontally striped skirt, and I'm never a slave to trends - I strictly only wear what I like and what looks good on my figure, which is more on the curvaceous side.

Name some of your favorite Philly boutiques.
I love Joan Shepp, because her boutique is one of the most well-curated collections of pieces from small, independent designers and well-known fashion houses, and the handbag selection is to die for. It's hardly ever prim and proper, and you can always find something funky and unexpected - like a Sonia Rykiel leather corset belt or a beaded head piece Isabella Blow would have worn.

I also love Arcadia, because they prove that eco-chic doesn't have to be dumpy! Their new boutique in Rittenhouse is like raiding your cool older sister's closet.

If you could get one store to open here, which would it be?
I think Philly deserves a Top Shop -- stylish, on-trend pieces with just a touch of European flair for a fairly reasonable price. Come on! An Opening Ceremony would be nice too, a great place for some seriously funky, off-the wall, 90's-inspired pieces in neutral colors.

Where's the best spot in Philly for stylish people-watching?
At the risk of sounding clichéd, I have to say Rittenhouse Square or Washington Square. Well-dressed people tend to prefer squares.

What's one thing you hate spending money on?
Clothing!! I hate to spend more than $25 on anything! I'm (clearly) great at bargain-hunting and finding sales. I have been known to blow my savings on anything obnoxiously pink, like the theatrically high-collared wool coat I bought from Umit Unal, an atelier in Istanbul, or the pink PVC Furla Candy Bag from their latest collection.

What trend do you wish would just shrivel up and die?
Creepers -- the shoes, and the people. But I actually think the shoes are worse! Why, oh why, do people think they look good?

Tell us about the oldest item in your closet. Why are you still holding onto it, and what do you love about it?
Definitely the combat boots I bought from the Delias catalogue when I was 15. Literally. I still wear them, a decade later!! There's no good way to store them, and they usually stay sprawled at the bottom of my closet. I promise myself after each winter I'll throw them away, and could never bring myself to do it.

What are the five key pieces for this season?
A long, flowy chiffon maxi skirt; anything in eye-popping pink or orange (Think Jil Sander);
chunky heels; a big bold, futuristic ring; and a surfer-inspired bikini from Lisa Marie Fernandez

Some Dim Some and Then Some

I had another beautiful Boston Sunday, getting Dim Sum with my beautiful Boston girlfriends. We walked off the cart-loads of foods with a stroll around Chinatown, shopping downtown, and then a late-night guy-bashing session, complete with fried food and beers.

I had never had dim sum before, and I must admit that when I first sat down and saw the spread, which included, steaming bamboo dishes brimming with unknown food items, most wrapped in leaves or otherwise unidentifiable, I was certain that I would leave hungry -- or worse, having lost my appetite. Most items whizzing by on wheels were a combination of weird, greyish, soupy, and spongy, and one of them had feet. It seemed to me like a dessert cart for animal parts. But, not one to be rude, I politely tried a few dishes (up to and certainly not including the chicken feet), and really enjoyed (most of) them, not to mention the primordial thrill of "hunting" for my meal (i.e. spotting it roll by on a cart, pouncing, and devouring it.)

(please note my hand gesture, which is sign-language for : "That is so kind of you to offer me a chicken foot, but no thank you").

This handsome guy is probably someone's meal by now.

(My dream mint-green vespa, which I will naturally have to acquire a mint-green Kitchen-Aid mixer to match. Yes, that makes sense. It does.)

I'm so glad I tried dim sum, and I'm glad I was there with authentic, card-carrying Chinese people, to interpret and identify the yummy (and some not-so-yummy) things I was eating. Sometimes it's nice to be out of one's confort zone, and if you have an open mind and are not too self-conscious (for example, about less that stellar chopstick skills) you may really enjoy yourself and totally expand your horizons. And whatever you do, avoid the Beetle Juice.

Breaking and Entering

This weekend, my lovely girlfriends and I "broke in" to one girl's absentee boyfriends apartment complex to make use of the gorgeous pool and the shmancy grills and have us a good old American summer Sunday!

My outfit:

Skirt: Urban Outfitters

Hat: F21

Sunnies: Rayban Wayfarers.

And on a side note - I did little to none of the cooking. I just posed by the grill to keep up appearances.

I'd also like to mention, and exclamations of disbelief and praise will be appreciated - I bought the UO skirt about a decade ago, when I was 15. I'm very proud of taking such good care of it and keeping it so white and clean! I only wear it a few times each summer, but it goes with almost everything, and I love the intricate lace detail at the bottom, it's very shabby chic.When I put it on, I know Summer est arrive!

Cynthia Rowley Accessory Inspires Self-Afflicted Wounds

Found these...gems (sorry!) rummaging through the online Stylephiles at Boston.com. These insanely, unneccessarily cute bandages from Cynthia Rowley are so stylin' that I may be forced to injure myself just for the chance to wear one. They definitely beat out those lame Hello Kitty strips I used to steal from my little cousin, and certainly outdo those neutral ,flesh-toned bandages, which I may venture to say are racist (come on, not every one has beige plastic colored skin!) or at least not PC.

Don't run with scissors! (Or...do!)
