Boston Holiday Look #2

Dress, Emerson ($415). Necklace, Laura Passenti ($180) at Artistry. Bracelets, Sophie Hughes ($140-220 each) at Artistry. Ring, Seven Halos, Clutch, Reiss ($155). Shoes, Manolo Blahnik.

This is fast becoming my uniform for the Holiday Party Circuit this season!

A leather-effect maxi tee shirt dress may not sound - at first - like the obvious choice for a season of family holiday parties, but this one by Emerson is just the right amounts elegant, playful, and effortless, so in my book, it works!! To take it from sexily fierce to festive I paired it with sophisticated (and low) pointy slingbacks by Manolo Blahnik and some au naturel jewelry from Sophie Hughes, Seven Halos, and Laura Passenti to round it out.

My number one tip for dressing up is - stay away from looking too costumey. Dressing up doesn't have to mean looking like an extra in The Nutcracker. A close second Rule of Thumb: Stay true to your own style! If you don't feel like yourself (well, a slightly more elegant and drunk-on-eggnog version of yourself), you're not going to feel comfortable. I'm all about experimentation, but moments before a party isn't the time to try something that's too much of a departure from your usual style, no matter what the lady at the boutique, the steeply discounted sale price, or the hair stylist says.

Lastly - walking in the door looking like a million bucks is one thing, but to keep that up past cocktail hour, you'll need to be comfortable. You'll be doing a lot of mingling and hanging out under the mistletoe, so invest in something you won't need a team of elves to help you squeeze into or something that you can't sit in a standard chair in. I'm not talking sweat pants and fur-lined moccasins (My nearly-everyday winter wardrobe) but you do need to make sure you are wearing the clothes and the clothes aren't wearing you. That's why I chose this familiar, comfortable silhouette - what's more cozy than a T-shirt? - but in an updated, upgrade material like microsuede.
